How to choose

Choose sea delivery if…

Your boat is seaworthy, in the water, and going somewhere reachable by sea in a sensible passage. For a typical 30 to 50ft sailing yacht moving around the UK or to Europe, this is usually the best value. Real UK deliveries in 2025–26 ranged from £450 for a short hop to around £2,800 from the south coast to the Clyde. See yacht delivery cost.

Choose shipping if…

The route is long or crosses an ocean, your motor yacht would burn thousands of pounds of fuel getting there, or you want to avoid sea miles on a new or valuable boat. See yacht shipping cost and sail or ship?

Choose road if…

Your boat lives on a trailer, is going inland, isn't fit for a sea passage, or has to arrive on a fixed date. Check the width first: loads over 2.9m need police notification and much wider boats need permits and escorts. See boat transport cost.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest way to move a boat?

It depends on the boat and the distance. Small trailer boats are cheapest by road. Seaworthy yachts moving along the coast or within Europe are usually cheapest by sea with a delivery skipper. Shipping is usually the most expensive but can compete on ocean routes.

What is the fastest way to move a boat?

For UK moves, road is usually fastest once booked, as the journey is a day or two and doesn't depend on sea conditions. On long international routes, shipping can be quicker than sailing, but you have to wait for a scheduled sailing.

Can I get quotes for more than one option?

Yes. When you request quotes on BoatMove you can add the other transport modes to the same request, so you can compare sea, ship and road prices side by side.

Does it cost anything to request quotes?

No. Requesting and comparing quotes on BoatMove is free for boat owners, with no obligation to book. Partners pay BoatMove a fee only when a move is booked.

How are BoatMove partners vetted?

Every partner is approved by a person, for each service they offer. Insurance is checked before approval, independent skippers must provide a certificate of competence, and new partners go through a probation period.
